S&T AG's new smart energy business area has secured the largest order
in the company's history. The order encompasses S&T's supplying smart
meters (of which there will be a total of 330,000) and associated
technologies and the management software requisite to operate the
items. The customer is a consortium. It in turn has been commissioned
with Europe's first major-sized smart metering project. The
implementation of it will start at the end of September. The order is
worth some 20 million dollars to S&T. Its delivery of items is to
start in the first quarter of 2015.

The order comprises S&T's delivering smart metering units (of which
there will be a total of 330,000) plus the head-end hardware and
software system requisite to operate these. S&T's customer is a
Korean-Polish consortium. It, in turn, won a tender placed by
Poland's largest energy supplier. The tender is for the equipping of
the municipality of Wroclaw, which has a population of 630,000, with
smart electricity meters. The commission means some 20 million
dollars of business for S&T. Test deliveries are to be made in the
fourth quarter of this year. The roll out is scheduled for the first
quarter of 2015. Revenues of some 3 million dollars are expected for
each quarter.

This "Smart City Wroclaw" project features the installation of AMI
(Advanced Metering Infrastructure). Many such projects are planned
for Europe. This is one of the largest currently being realized. The
project's key goals are the enabling and assuring of the proactive
determination of consumption and the achieving of an especially high
level of security from grid outage. The grid also permits consumers
to utilize - via an online-platform - query and notification
features. These include the alerting of consumers to the exceeding of
self-imposed limits on daily consumption.

Taking the commission into account, S&T is planning the attainment in
2015 of sales of EUR 465 million. This would represent a rise of 24%
over the EUR 375 million forecast for 2014. Viewed generally, the
smart energy segment is developing well and growing strongly. This is
being furthered by the strong support being accorded by the European
Union to the use of smart electricity meters, and by the ever-growing
share of energy stemming from alternative sources. Upon the
conclusion of the Smart City pilot project in Wroclaw in 2016, the
energy supplier plans to tender a commission with a volume of 4
million meters and a previewed value of more than 400 million
dollars. The commission will be for all of southern Poland.

Smart grids ...are "intelligent". This means that they enable
bidirectional communication between energy suppliers and consumers.
The smart meters installed on consumers' premises employ a
low-voltage power grid to communicate with a head-end system, which
aggregates the data supplied to it by the smart grid's components.
These flows of data enable the real-time determination of levels of
grid utilization. This, in turn, permits the intelligent distribution
of such loads. It also allows for the pricing of electricity in
accordance with supply and demand. The growing share of energy
stemming from alternative sources is the prime driver of the
deployment of smart grids. This is because the grid technologies
previously used are not capable of handling such systems'
characteristics.
