 TNS Infratest Survey: Low cost flights in Europe on the Up / German consumers often want more than just no-frills concepts

Low cost flights are still in popular demand among consumers in
the five key European markets. This is one of the main results of the
Low Cost Carrier Monitor (LCCM), a representative consumer survey
conducted in Germany, France, the UK, Italy and Spain by TNS
Infratest and now already in its fourth wave. In a series of over
13,000 interviews, including 5,000 current users of low cost
airlines, the traffic experts at TNS Infratest gathered extensive
data on the structure of low cost flights, the assessment of airlines
offering low cost flights and the potential for low cost flights in
the relevant countries. Basic indicators for the maturity of the low
cost flight market in each country are determined, in the first
instance, by the reported use to date of such offers and, in the
second, by the intended future use, in other words, potential.
The most advanced market for low cost flights is the UK, where 41%
of consumers claim to have flown with an airline offering low cost
flights at some time or other. This puts user rate two or three times
higher than in the other four countries. In contrast, the basic
market potential for low cost flights stands at 58%. In other words,
a large proportion of the potential market for the low cost flights
has already been tapped. In a direct comparison between the survey
countries this figure is the highest.
