Graz/Vienna, 21 December 2006. The consortium VA TECH HYDRO GmbH /
MCE Industrietechnik Linz GmbH & Co, under the leadership of VA TECH
HYDRO GmbH, received an order from Cleuson Dixence Construction SA,
Switzerland, for the rehabilitation of the pressure shaft for the
1,200 MW power station Cleuson Dixence based in the canton Wallis,
Switzerland. The total order value amounts to approximately 127 MEUR
(thereof more than half for Andritz VA TECH HYDRO). Erection works
will commence in mid of 2007, the start-up of the commercial
operation is planned for the end of 2009.

With a gross head of 1,880 m the hydropower station Cleuson Dixence
has the world’s highest gross head. The three pelton turbines with
an output of 423 MW each, delivered by Andritz VA TECH HYDRO in 1998,
also represent world record.

In December 2000, the steel tunnel lining of the power station
Cleuson Dixence burst. After detailed investigations on the causes
of the damage a general rehabilitation concept was provided. In 2003
Énergie Ouest Suisse SA and Grande Dixence SA founded Cleuson-Dixence
Construction SA, with the goal to rehabilitate the power station.

In the course of the rehabilitation the entire pressure tunnel will
be provided with an additional steel lining on a length of 4 km. The
total weight of this new lining amounts to 12,600 tons. The design
pressure of 200 bars is presently the world-wide highest design
pressure for a penstock of a hydropower plant. In order to secure
the high quality requirements of the new steel lining an extensive
qualification program for the material and the weldings is to be
accomplished before start of manufacturing.
